One of the most important due diligence steps for organic psyllium buyers is verifying that your supplier's organic certificates are genuine, current, and cover the specific product and scope you're purchasing. Certificate fraud is a documented problem in the organic ingredient trade.
Why Certificate Verification Matters
A fraudulent or expired organic certificate exposes your business to: (1) regulatory non-compliance β your organic product labels become false claims; (2) financial loss β you paid organic premium pricing for conventional product; (3) brand damage β organic product recalls are highly public events.
Verifying USDA NOP Certification
The USDA maintains a public Organic Integrity Database at ams.usda.gov/organic-integrity. To verify a USDA NOP certificate: 1. Go to ams.usda.gov/organic-integrity 2. Search by company/certificate number 3. Confirm the operation name matches your supplier 4. Check the certificate expiration date (must be current) 5. Verify the scope includes the specific product and processing/handling activities
A valid USDA NOP certificate lists the specific operations covered (farming, processing, handling) and specific products. If the certificate doesn't specifically cover psyllium husk processing, the product cannot legally be sold as USDA Organic in the USA.
Verifying EU Organic Certification
EU Organic certificates are issued by national certification bodies (e.g., ECOCERT, Soil Association, Bioagricert, Control Union). To verify: 1. Ask the supplier for the full certificate (not just a logo/statement) 2. Note the certifying body name and certificate number 3. Search the certifying body's online certificate database 4. Check certificate validity period and scope 5. For Indian exporters, the certificate should be issued under EU Regulation (EU) 2018/848
Red Flags β Signs of Certificate Fraud
- Low-resolution PDF that appears scanned multiple times - Certificate date doesn't match current year - Scope vague β doesn't specifically mention the product form you're buying - Certifying body is unfamiliar or not accredited - Supplier refuses to share the full original certificate - Certificate number doesn't match when you search the database
Processing Certificate vs. Farm Certificate
A common oversight: buyers verify the farm's organic certificate but not the processor's organic certificate. The processing facility must also be certified organic. The farm and processing operations can have separate certificates from the same certifying body.
At Amar Herbal Origins, we provide current USDA NOP and EU Organic certificates covering our processing facility. Both are verifiable on the respective certifying body databases and provided upfront with any sample request. Encourage any buyer to verify ours before committing.
