What Is an NPN and Why Does It Matter?
A Natural Product Number is required for any psyllium husk product sold in Canada as a natural health product. The NPN license is product-specific and requires documentation about the product's ingredients, dosage form, recommended conditions of use, and evidence of safety and efficacy.

What Documentation Does Your Supplier Need to Provide?
For a successful NPN application, your psyllium husk supplier from India must provide:
(1) Product Specifications: Detailed specification sheet including botanical name (Plantago ovata), plant part used (seed husk), form (whole husk, powder), purity grades, and testing parameters.
(2) Certificate of Analysis (COA): From an accredited third-party laboratory. Parameters must include: swelling factor/index, moisture content, total ash, acid insoluble ash, heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic), microbiology (TPC, E. coli, Salmonella, yeast, mold), and pesticide residue panel.
(3) Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Evidence: Certificate of compliance with GMP standards (ISO 22000 or equivalent).
(4) Stability Data: Evidence that the product maintains specification over its claimed shelf life under recommended storage conditions.
(5) Non-GMO Declaration: Psyllium is inherently non-GMO, but Health Canada requires formal documentation.
