Psyllium Husk Supplier Canada: Health Canada NPN & NHP Documentation Guide

Canada regulates psyllium husk as a Natural Health Product (NHP) requiring an NPN license. This guide explains what Canadian supplement brands need from their Indian psyllium supplier to successfully register and sell psyllium products in Canada.

Canada's Natural Health Products Regulations (NHPR) make it one of the world's most regulated markets for psyllium husk products. Unlike the USA where psyllium supplements are dietary supplements under DSHEA, Canadian products require a Natural Product Number (NPN) — a full product license from Health Canada.

What Is an NPN and Why Does It Matter?

A Natural Product Number is required for any psyllium husk product sold in Canada as a natural health product. The NPN license is product-specific and requires documentation about the product's ingredients, dosage form, recommended conditions of use, and evidence of safety and efficacy.

Your Indian psyllium supplier plays a critical role in NPN applications — they must provide comprehensive technical documentation about the raw material.

What Documentation Does Your Supplier Need to Provide?

For a successful NPN application, your psyllium husk supplier from India must provide:

(1) Product Specifications: Detailed specification sheet including botanical name (Plantago ovata), plant part used (seed husk), form (whole husk, powder), purity grades, and testing parameters.

(2) Certificate of Analysis (COA): From an accredited third-party laboratory. Parameters must include: swelling factor/index, moisture content, total ash, acid insoluble ash, heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic), microbiology (TPC, E. coli, Salmonella, yeast, mold), and pesticide residue panel.

(3) Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Evidence: Certificate of compliance with GMP standards (ISO 22000 or equivalent).

(4) Stability Data: Evidence that the product maintains specification over its claimed shelf life under recommended storage conditions.

(5) Non-GMO Declaration: Psyllium is inherently non-GMO, but Health Canada requires formal documentation.

Organic Psyllium for Canadian Market

Canada's CFIA recognizes both USDA Organic (under the Canada-US organic equivalency arrangement) and EU Organic certification. Canadian brands launching organic psyllium NHPs can use our USDA/EU certified organic psyllium with CFIA-recognized organic equivalency.

Bilingual Labelling

Canadian regulations require bilingual (English/French) product labelling under the Food and Drugs Act. We offer private label services with French-language label design support for Canadian brands.
