Isabgol vs Psyllium Husk: What's the Difference? (B2B Sourcing Guide)

Are isabgol and psyllium husk the same thing? Yes — but there are important nuances in product form, grade, and market usage. A clear guide for importers and supplement manufacturers.

If you've searched for psyllium husk suppliers from India, you'll have noticed that Indian sellers often use the term "Isabgol" interchangeably. Here's what you need to know about the relationship between isabgol and psyllium husk.

Isabgol and Psyllium Husk Are the Same Plant

Isabgol is the Hindi/Urdu/Gujarati name for Plantago ovata — the plant species from which psyllium husk is derived. "Psyllium" comes from Greek (psyllion = flea), a reference to the appearance of the seeds. "Isabgol" translates roughly as "horse's ear" in Persian/Urdu, describing the shape of the seed.

In trade, "isabgol" and "psyllium husk" refer to identical product from identical botanical origin. Indian exporters typically use "isabgol" in domestic market references and "psyllium husk" in international documentation.

Product Forms to Understand

Whole Psyllium Husk (Isabgol Husk): The outer husk (seed coat) separated from the seed. This is the most commercially important form — it's what's in Metamucil and similar products. Purity is measured by swelling factor (≥40 ml/g for 99% grade).

Psyllium Husk Powder (Isabgol Powder): The whole husk milled to a fine powder (40–100 mesh). Used in tablet/capsule formulations and functional foods where the whole husk texture isn't desired. Swelling factor ≥50 ml/g.

Psyllium Seeds (Isabgol Seeds): The whole seed before husk separation. Used in the extraction of seed oil and in some traditional medicine preparations. Lower fiber content than the husk.

Blonde Psyllium Husk: Premium grade with very light color — preferred for supplement products where white/light color is important for aesthetic reasons.

Organic Psyllium Husk / Organic Isabgol: Certified organic (USDA, EU) whole husk or powder.

Which Term Should You Use in Your Import Documents?

For clarity and international standardization, use "Psyllium Husk" in your purchase orders, letter of credit, and customs documentation. The HS code is 1211.90.90 (plants and plant parts of a kind primarily used in perfumery, pharmacy, or for insecticidal, fungicidal, or similar purposes — other).

Indian suppliers will understand both terms, but international documentation in English should use "Psyllium Husk" to avoid any customs classification ambiguity.

Quality Hierarchy

From highest to lowest commercial value: (1) Organic Psyllium Husk Powder 99%, (2) Organic Whole Psyllium Husk 99%, (3) Conventional Psyllium Husk Powder 99%, (4) Conventional Whole Psyllium Husk 99%, (5) Psyllium Husk 98%, (6) Psyllium Seeds.
