India is the world's dominant castor oil producer, accounting for over 60% of global supply. Gujarat's unique agro-climate — semi-arid with long growing seasons — is ideal for Ricinus communis (castor plant) cultivation. The result: India exports thousands of tonnes of castor oil annually to pharmaceutical companies, cosmetic brands, and industrial manufacturers across the world.
Why Indian Castor Oil Dominates Global Supply
The Ricinus communis plant thrives in Gujarat's districts of Mehsana, Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, and Kutch. These regions produce high-yield castor seed with consistent ricinoleic acid content (85–90%) — the key active fatty acid that makes castor oil commercially valuable.
India's castor oil advantages over other origins: (1) Scale — Gujarat processes more castor seed than any other region globally, (2) Technology — modern cold-press and solvent extraction facilities, (3) Competitive pricing — volume and proximity to raw material keeps costs low, (4) Export infrastructure — Kandla and Mundra ports are optimized for bulk oil exports.
Castor Oil Grades — What Each Means
Pharmaceutical BP/USP Grade: Meets British Pharmacopoeia or United States Pharmacopeia monograph specifications. Parameters: ricinoleic acid ≥85%, acid value ≤2.0 mg KOH/g, iodine value 82–90, specific gravity 0.953–0.965. Used as oral laxative, excipient, emollient, solvent in injectable formulations.
Cosmetic Grade: High purity castor oil for skin care, hair care, lip products (lipstick, gloss), mascara, and other personal care formulations. Slightly less stringent documentation than pharmaceutical but same purity level.
Food Grade: For use in food applications — castor oil as a mould-release agent, coating agent, and in certain food preservation applications. Must meet food safety standards.
Industrial Grade: For industrial applications including lubricants, hydraulic fluids, bioplastics, paints, and biofuel. Lower cost per litre, less refined.
Applications of Castor Oil by Sector
Pharmaceutical: Oral laxative (stimulant cathartic), IV solubility enhancer, emollient in ointments, excipient in capsule formulations, injection vehicle (when ultra-purified).
Cosmetics/Personal Care: The global castor oil cosmetics market is growing rapidly. Key applications: hair oil/serum, brow and lash growth products, lip gloss base, moisturizer, body oil, shampoo conditioner formulation.
Industrial: Castor oil-based polyols for polyurethane (PU) foam manufacturing, hydraulic fluids, greases, bio-lubricants, corrosion-resistant coatings, and as a plasticizer.
Biopesticide/Agriculture: Castor oil as a biopesticide carrier and emulsifier in organic farming.
Karanja Oil — Complementary Industrial and Cosmetic Oil
Amar Herbal Origins also supplies Karanja oil (Pongamia pinnata) alongside castor oil. Karanja oil contains unique insecticidal compounds (karanjin, pongamol) making it valuable for biopesticide formulations, mosquito repellents, and traditional hair care.
